From “John Svitana – by Donald Brodie (Grandson)”

Pioneers and Progress, Alix Clive Historical Club, 1974

John Svitana (1900 – 1965), powder blaster, of the village of Zdair, Czechoslovakia, was born on June 25, 1900.  Educated in Zdair and lived there to marry his first wife, Elizabeth (maiden name unknown).  They had three children: the first two boys dying in infancy.  Mary is the only surviving child of John and Elizabeth.[1974]  John emigrated to Canada in 1925 leaving his wife and daughter behind on a small farm near Zdair.  Elizabeth died six years later, leaving Mary with her sister Margaret of Spisska Bela, Slovakia.  The happenings of John’s first farm are unknown.  Mary lived with her aunt Margaret for a period of three years when John sent money for Mary’s boat fare to Canada.  John worked in the mines in Sudbury, Ontario as a blaster.  They lived there for two years before coming out West to live on a farm approximately 3 ½ miles east of Haynes.  John married the widow, Mrs. Macey, and they lived on that farm until the family split up in 1937; Mary to live with close friends.  In 1946 John bought a farm approximately 2 ½ miles north of Haynes, where he lived by himself until his death in 1965. Mary married Bill Brodie in 1947, and John’s estate was left to their five children who now [1974] presently hold title to John’s land.

John Svitana was buried in the cemetery in Alix, Alberta.
