Sign Language

Tribes that traded with one another on the Northern Plains often spoke different languages, so they developed a system of gestures to replace spoken words. When Europeans first encountered First Nations people, they were astonished by the ability of so many tribes to communicate with each other so effortlessly. This form of sign language is highly complex – more than just a series of greetings – and is still used today.
